Escaping Mosquitos|Nature|Wildlife|Outdoors

Hello, I’m the OUTDOOR PROFESSOR from DiscoveringTheOutdoors.com/

Here’s your outdoor tip on how to escape mosquitos.

Unless you live in Antarctica, you probably will find mosquitos somewhere and sometimes in the outdoors.  Most people have some allergic reaction to a mosquito bite, but fortunately most bites just result in an itchy bump on the skin.  Don’t worry…a mosquito only can drink about three times its weight in blood so it would take about 1.2 million bites to drain the average adult’s body, but they can carry viruses and parasites in their saliva so there is some risk in receiving a bite and at least an allergic reaction.

Some people are mosquito magnets, but some people seem to be able to be outside without being visited by mosquitos.  Somehow mosquitos sense a favorite target.  Insect repellents are a multimillion dollar industry, and provide some relief.  But are there other things you can do to avoid mosquitos?  Here’s a list of things you can consider to escape mosquitos in the outdoors:

1.  Don’t move around any more than necessary.  This may not be possible with some outdoor activities, but remember that mosquitos will use sight to begin identifying their victims.  The more you move, the more you identify yourself as a potential target.

2.  Try not to work up a sweat.  Perspiration provides moisture and odors that let them home in on your location.

3.  Take a tip in a cool body of water—or a cold shower.  Mosquitoes will find you like heat-seeking missiles if your boy transmits its warmth and they are close to you.

4.  Stay away from dark colored clothing such as a dark blue shirt.  Stay with white and lighted colored clothing.

5.  Stay out of the light.  Shine a flashlight on yourself and it’s like lighting up an airway runway for them to land on you.

6. Take a cool bath to eliminate body odor and don’t use perfume or deodorant.

7.  Stay away from alpha hydroxyl products.  Lactic acid from our skin pulls in blood seeking bugs so watch what’s in skin care products as many contain lactic acid.

8.  Try to stay relaxed and lower you rate of breathing.  Mosquitos detect carbon dioxide in the air so your breathing sends out the message that there is a blood-pumping animal nearby.

9.  Keep your feet clean.  Research has shown that the bacteria that grow on human feet create a smell that acts as a mosquito lure.

10.  Don’t drink beer or snack on smelly cheese such as limburger that has bacteria that will draw in the determined insects.

The secret in escaping mosquitos is not to draw attention to yourself.  These insects can’t help but like you—you provide the lunch that they need to be productive.  Make yourself hard to locate and you will find fewer visits from these blood seeking creatures in the outdoors.
